Girl Walks Into a Bar

Shangri-La Entertainment Announces a Gato Negro Film, 'Girl Walks Into a Bar'

Ensemble Cast Carla Gugino, Zachary Quinto, Danny DeVito, Josh Hartnett, Rosario Dawson, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Aaron Tveit, Robert Forster, Amber Valletta, Gil Bellows, Kevin Zegers and Alexis Bledel in First Major Motion Picture Created Specifically for Web Distribution

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Shangri-La Entertainment announced today that it has completed production on "Girl Walks Into a Bar," a feature-length film that follows a series of characters in interlocking stories taking place in ten different bars during the course of one evening in Los Angeles. By turns funny and heartbreaking, this sharp-witted comedy is written and directed by Sebastian Gutierrez ("Women in Trouble," "Elektra Luxx") and is produced by Steve Bing ("The Polar Express," "Shine A Light"), Richard Rosenblatt and Gutierrez. The film will be the first major motion picture created exclusively for Web distribution.

The film's cast of characters includes gangsters, exotic dancers and con-artists played by an ensemble, all-star cast including Carla Gugino ("Watchmen"), Zachary Quinto ("Star Trek"), Danny DeVito ("Get Shorty"), Josh Hartnett ("30 Days Of Night"), Rosario Dawson ("Grindhouse"), Emmanuelle Chriqui ("Entourage"), Aaron Tveit ("Ghost Town"), Academy Award® nominee Robert Forster ("Jackie Brown"), Amber Valletta ("Hitch"), Gil Bellows ("Flash Forward"), Kevin Zegers ("Gossip Girl"), Alexis Bledel ("Gilmore Girls"), Michelle Ryan ("Bionic Woman") and Xander Berkeley ("Nikita").

"We want to prove that Web distribution is a viable medium for theatrical quality movies which rely on story, characters and dialogue as opposed to special effects," said Sebastian Gutierrez. "For many reasons the theatrical indie landscape has changed drastically in the last few years, leaving many potential breakout hits without an audience. We are excited to break the rules of feature films by letting people watch our movie for free online."

"Girl Walks Into a Bar" connects a group of apparent strangers over one night across 10 bars throughout Los Angeles. Zachary Quinto stars as a dentist who teams up with a feisty would-be assassin (Carla Gugino) to put the final touches on the plan to kill his wife. Once he makes a play for the assassin's payment, he unknowingly sets off a chain of events that fuels a cross-town journey through the many lounges, bars, strip clubs and the occasional nudist ping pong club scattered across Los Angeles. Along the way, we are introduced to a series of idiosyncratic characters, from gangsters (Danny DeVito) to exotic dancers (Emmanuelle Chriqui, Alexis Bledel), from ex-cons (Robert Forster) to cops (Josh Hartnett, Gil Bellows), with the odd hatcheck girl (Rosario Dawson) and bartender (Amber Valletta) thrown in for good measure.

"Girl Walks Into a Bar" is co-produced by Shangri-La Entertainment's Zach Schwartz. The film's director of photography is Cale Finot and is edited by Lisa Bromwell A.C.E. The film's music is by Grant Lee Phillips.

Mr. Popper's Penguins

Carla Gugino set for 'Penguins'

Carla Gugino has inked a deal to star in 20th Century Fox's Jim Carrey family pic "Mr. Popper's Penguins."

Mark Waters is directing the film, a modern update of the beloved 1938 children's book.

John Davis is producing "Penguins" via his production company Davis Entertainment, which has a first-look deal with Fox.

In the film, Mr. Popper is a high-powered, New York buisness man who suddenly inherits six penguins. Taking care of the animals is no easy matter, and he quickly hits major hurtles, both at home and at work. But along the way, he learns the value of family and friendship--human and otherwise.

Fox acquired screen rights to Richard and Florence Atwater's classic kids book a year ago. Gugino is currently in post-production on Zack Snyder's action-fantasy "Sucker Punch."

She's repped by CAA, as are Carrey and Waters.

The story sounds very interesting as well. Plus having a great cast - that movie has to be good!

I think their plan about web distribution is a thing of beauty. So many people watch movies online (including btw the big special effects blockbuster) and so many indies lack distribution or are restricted to a few cities in the US and never make it out of the North American market. I can't wait.

Couldn't have said it better!

I think the movie will come out soon, very likely next month.
